Betsey Johnson

You can count on New York designer Betsey Johnson to follow her own set of rules and celebrate the exuberant, the embellished and the over-the-top. After many awards and 10 years of designing for other labels, Betsey decided to take a leap of faith and started the Betsey Johnson label in 1978. Designing for herself allowed Betsey the creative freedom to execute her vision to its fullest potential. Sexy silhouettes, glam rhinestones, hippie-inspired flowing fabrics, whimsical detailing and, most importantly, a fabulous fit, are what became known as Betsey's trademark look.

In 2011 Steve Madden acquired Betsey Johnson, after the crazy-haired, cartwheeling designer nearly defaulted on a $48.8 million loan. Steve Madden took on the debt, with hopes to save Johnson’s company from the bankruptcy and near extinction that it faced. He officially took over Betsey Johnson and has full ownership of the company, however he assures us that Betsey will continue to have creative control over her eponymous label, and all design decisions will remain her call.
