Rihanna's wearing a shirt that says, "She died of perfection." I love it, because it's ironic. I'm a huge fan of irony. I mean, LOOK AT THIS GIRL'S OUTFIT:
We've got a giant tutu, a boyfriend blazer that may or may not have tails and shudder socks and heels again. AND THAT SMUG LOOK ON HER FACE. Because she knows it's a far cry from perfection, and yet, she can brazenly wear it, because one day long ago, Jay-Z gave her a record deal and now she wears shoulder pads and harem pants like they're jeans and a t-shirt, and I now have seizures when I hear the words "ella-ella-ella". Maybe it really is some sick form of perfection after all. I mean, if I could wear this stuff, then see thousands of copycats wearing the same ridiculous outfit only because I'm Rihanna - or Lady Gaga for that matter - you better believe I would.
But let's talk about the shoes. I'm torn on the shoes. They're platform bowtie pumps from Marni, and I'm finding them hard to judge due to the peripheral fug of the outfit - particularly those frekin' socks.

They're a bit clunky, but I'd like to see them paired with something a little more appropriate - some skinny jeans, or a tartan dress perhaps. They're certainly eye catching, and full of character. What do you think?

The last time we saw Rihanna in her beige Christian Louboutin "Pigalle" pumps, she wore them with that hideously shoulder-padded teal jumpsuit from fashion hell. This is what she decided to wear them with next:
I don't know what this dress is made of - is it leather? Is it plastic? All I see is a cleverly tailored garbage bag. Seriously, this looks like it walked right off of Mugatu's "Derelicte" runway in Zoolander. It's not so much that it's ugly, it's that it looks like it's "inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique", to quote Mugatu. And while I'm sure it's very expensive, a hefty price is no excuse for wearing a Hefty bag.
And to the legions of Rihanna fans, I want to specify that I'm not saying she's not talented, although she owes most of her career to Jay-Z, and I'm not saying she's not beautiful, although as Derek Zoolander says there's more to life than being really, really ridiculously good looking. I'm just saying I hate that frekin' dress. And it's hurtful to Loubs on her feet, who's simple and chic style make them perfect for every outfit. Except for ugly trash bag dress. Fin.

I think what I find most perplexing about Rihanna is how she manages to wear something like this while keeping a straight face:
If she were the elderly wife of an eccentric rich man, or possibly a drag queen on a Caribbean cruise, this would be okay. However, this is apparently what she wore to go to the doctor's office. I hope she was tested for "the crazy", and had those hideously fringey sleeves amputated. I suppose I should be happy she's not abusing her frame with boxy shoulder pads again (and for those who doubt her obsession with shoulder pads, please look at the outfit she wore for her American Idol performance), but really, this outfit is causing me to picture her on a cruise ship doing a bad cover of "La Isla Bonita".
RiRi took Spring's big floral trend a step further by pairing it with an exotic animal print in the form of her Alexander Wang "Isabeli" heels:

I love edgy the shape of this mule heel - if fits Rihanna's personal style quite well. I also like how Rihanna mixed the two prints - it creates a wild and delightfully schizophrenic springtime look. I think I'd like it better without those sleeves and the island pimp hat, though. What do you think?

This still isn't as bad as the dude I saw grocery shopping in socks and flip-flops the other day, but I'm certainly not impressed:
Look, I don't want to pick on Rihanna. And y'know what? I don't hate her outfit. I do, however, have a deep, vehement hatred for socks and pointy heels.
Alexander Wang recently sent some of his models down the runway in trouser socks and heels - specifically the "Freja" bootie we last saw on Rihanna. However, runway fashion doesn't always translate perfectly to the real world - hence the separation between haute couture and prêt-à-porter lines. I suppose celebrity lifestyle lends itself to eccentric, attention grabbing ensembles that come right off the runway. I often find, however, that when runway looks are worn by celebrities, the original statement is lost, to be replaced only by celebrity hype. And what statement does socks and heels make anyway? Is it because she was at the Kids' Choice Awards, and kids are the only ones who would think it's okay to wear socks and heels? I guess she should have worn bobby socks. What do you think?
For the record, Rihanna wore those socks with some Brian Atwood heels.

I suspect Rihanna has some deep, deep hatred for her shoulders. Otherwise, how does one explain this? And this? And THIS:
I cried a little when I saw that shoulder pads were coming back into fashion, and I curse Rihanna's persistent promotion of this trend. Shoulder pads make me think of football players. Now, while I don't know much about football, I do know that there is no such thing as "Football chic" - unless of course you're Posh Beckham, and this is what you wear to watch your husband play football, which is actually soccer anyway, and thus has nothing to do with shoulder pads in the first place. My point is, shoulder pads have a tendency to make one look like a linebacker. And while I actually have no clue what a linebacker is, I know they wear big-ass shoulder pads and aren't known for their style.
And what the hell is she wearing on her lower half? Haute couture gym shorts? Is she going with some kind of sports theme here? Congrats, Rihanna. You are now captain of the gayest football team ever.
RiRi topped this look off with a pair of Alexander Wang "Freja" laced zip boots. I'm not sure how I feel about these boots. While many of the peep-toed boots that have come up in the past year have grown on me, these feature an open toe, and to me, the whole concept of a "boot", in theory, kinda contradicts the concept of an "open toe". While I like the mixture of lacing and zippers and the double layered top, I just feel like I'm seeing too much toe. Thoughts?

I think there's a reason prison inmates are forced to wear ugly, one piece jumpsuits while serving their sentence behind bars. This is because behind bars is where the whole concept of "the jumpsuit" belongs. Example:
Rihanna's got her fierce face on. I guess you'd have to when photographers are snapping photos of you right after 1981 threw up on you.
We've got side boob and shoulder pads here, people. Throw in some pointy ears and some braces this is what the sluttiest geek girl at a Star Trek convention would wear. Those elaborate sleeves are attached all the way down her legs, which horrifies me. Unless those sleeves double as wings and she can fly (in which case this outfit goes from fug to AWESOME), I see nothing fashionable about wearing an outfit with sleeves on which you can trip. It just seems like one big, ugly safety hazard.
Rihanna wore a pair of nude Christian Louboutin "Pigalle" pumps with this monstrosity. While I like these super high heels, I don't think they're right for the outfit. In fact, I'm not sure any shoe would be right for this outfit. Send it back to hell from where it came! I feel like pointy high heels just makes her whole look so harsh - which is probably the point, y'know, so that everyone is afraid to tell her how hideous she looks for fear of getting a pointy shoulder pad to the eye or pointy toe to the groin.
Rihanna, you are not Elvis. Leave the jumpsuit at home. Thanks.

Rihanna stunned crowds again when she wore head-to-toe Hussein Chalayan to the designer's fashion show in Paris Oct. 5th.  Yes, those are rubber thigh high boots with built-in garters.  I guess it's only right that she wear waterproof fashion since she is known for (among other things) her hit song "Umbrella".  Rihanna has become a fashion fixture in the front rows of all the top shows in Paris, including the Jean Paul Gaultier show with pal Katy Perry.  Do you like the rubber boots?  I think this look suits her, even though I can think of no one else who could make thigh-high galoshes look this good.

Now if you'd like to try thigh-high boots on for size, may I suggest the bebe Daniela thigh high boot .  In brown suede it is much less SM:

Here's Rihanna stepping out to dinner in NYC the other day. I'm not sure what beast had to die to make that thing she's got wrapped around her head and torso, but I'm loving her Giuseppe Zanotti wedge boots:

Wedge heels can often be clunky, but these wedges are tapered, for a daintier look, and the printed heel is a great way to wear an animal print without going over the top.
I imagine these with a pair of skinny jeans, or possibly leggings. I'm not feeling the cut-offs that Rihanna's wearing. I mean, the pocket is hanging out from under the hem! I've got love for cut-offs, but when the pocket is trashily hanging out, you're a hop, skip and a jump away from walking barefoot into a public bathroom (Britney, I'm looking at you). Check out the leopard print gladiators RiRi's sporting. At first glance, I thought they may be Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain, seeing as Rihanna seems to favour a lot of Balmain shoes. However, these look a wee bit different. Anyone who recognizes these, please let us know!
I like the idea of leopard gladiators, it's a spunky twist on a standard shoe. Sam Edelman makes a stylish leopard gladiator:

Rihanna's wearing a pair of shoes from Azzedine Alaia's Spring 2009 collection. These python skin sandals feature cute bells on the ankle and toe straps - I guess everyone can hear Rihanna coming from miles away!
These shoes are very, very loud - perfect for Rihanna's bold style. I love how she balanced these shoes with a simple dress and minimal accessories, for a clean look. Shoes like these could easily overwhelm an outfit with too many accessories or loud clothing. Kudos to Rihanna!

Rihanna made blue her theme that day, with a pair of blue suede Christian Louboutin pumps with a little denim tube dress and a little blue... hat type thing. Her blue ensemble is pretty hot, but I think it could do without the hat. Rihanna's offbeat hairstyles are far too cool to hide!
Blake Lively wore a pair of blue suede strappy sandals by Spanish owned clothing store Zara on the set of Gossip Girl. These shoes caught my eye immediately, with the bright electric blue colour and unique design. These shoes can be purchased at Zara stores, or you can check out the Steve Madden "Makel" for an excellent substitute. Steve Madden also makes a lovely blue suede shoe like Rihanna's Louboutins - the Steve Madden "Trinitie". Both are great substitutions for excellent prices!

Y'know, I really am a fan of Rihanna's edgy, eclectic style. She has the stones to wear some truly bold pieces, and even pulls it off from time to time. However, sometimes, I just look at her and scratch my head:
I see a white shirt with high-waisted cycling shorts under some inappropriately horizontally striped cover, with a dash of camel toe. I'm pretty nonplussed already, and I haven't even gotten to the shoes:

Aside from the fact that shin-height boots with shorts make her look short, these boots are creating cankles where there are none while offending my fashion sense, my feet and my eyes. They create a similar effect to that of wearing legwarmers, a rather unattractive malady I like to call "The Clydesdale Effect". In other words Rihanna, you look like you have hooves.
These look similar to a few Giuseppe Zanotti boots I've seen recently, where the top folds over to create that legwarmer-ish look, specifically the Zip Flap Low boot and the i98055. Like Ugg boots, I find this style takes away from the sexy shape of a feminine shoe. What do you think?

When I first saw this picture today, I thought, "Man, you just know that Lady GaGa is seething in envy over Rihanna's boots."
I pondered for a while over whom might make such boots, until I discovered that they aren't really boots at all; no, these are a pair of thigh high, footless leather leggings. Yeah, you heard me. FOOTLESS LEATHER LEGGINGS. With cutouts. I think I need a drink or ten. I mean, footless leather leggings, really? Is that necessary? Although it does tickle me to think that Rihanna probably walked around with the cut out pattern from the leggings embossed on her legs for days after she wore them.
I might be able to tolerate them if they were boots, instead of just fancy leggings trickily paired with peep toe booties. Tricky tricky! I suppose these leggings are very versatile, in that you could pair them with all sorts of shoes to create lots of different looks. However, absolutely all of the looks are only appropriate if you're a rockstar, dominatrix, or Lindsay Lohan.
The leggings are made by Rodarte and cost over nine hundred bucks! I think I'd rather put the money towards boots!

Here's Rihanna at LAX on Wednesday. Don't ask me what the hell is on the top of her head. Is it a jheri curl? Did she shave Lionel Richie? Did she go with this because it's easy? ...Just as Easy as Sunday Morning one might say?
Rihanna offset the curl on her head with some straight ass fringe on her feet! RiRi wore a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain fringe flats. Now, I will admit I often find it hard to accept the fringe, however, I would actually kinda like these if it weren't for Rihanna's unfortunate choice to pair these with rolled up jeans. That's a lot of attention drawn to her ankles, and I'm not entirely convinced that it isn't excessive leg hair poking out from under her jeans.
Paired with a skirt or shorts, I think these sandals would look very hot, particularly on someone with legs like Rihanna. These flats cost upwards of $700, so to rock this look for less, try the Candela "Fieco":

The Candela "Fieco" features similar suede fringe to the Balmain version, but in a thong sandal. What do you think of Rihanna's fringe?

Here's Rihanna in NYC sporting one of this seasons hottest trends, cut-out boots and pumps. When I first saw them, I wasn't sure if they were Martin Margiela, or if Chris Brown just took a big old bite out of one of RiRi's patent leather boots.
Rihanna's boots are indeed a patent leather pair from Maison Martin Margiella, who're known for off-beat designs, like Sarah Jessica Parker's split toed boots, and Rachel Bilson's sandal booties. While I find it hard to get on board with many Margiela designs, I do like the unique style of this boot:

The bold cut-outs pop against the patent leather, and the small flash of skin is subtly sexy. You can try rocking the cut-out trend with these by Haider Ackermann:

These Haider Ackermann suede cut-out boots are chic boots that show off the Achilles. I think the small strip of skin is very sexy, and probably causes far fewer blisters than the Margiela model. What do you think?

Here's Rihanna at the Inauguration Charity Ball in Washington D.C. on Tuesday. I'm not so sure how I feel about the dress... The colour looks great on her, however, we're very close to seeing nipple and the cut kinda makes her look like a slutty Shirley Temple. However, I've seen Rihanna in worse, so I'll take what I can get, y'know?

I will forgive Rihanna's unfortunate dress, because I think these shoes are very hot. Studded heels and boots have been a major trend recently, like the "Mad Mary" heel by Christian Louboutin (seen on Madonna), various styles from Manolo Blahnik, studded heels from Jimmy Choo, and wonderfully extravagant spiked and studded designs from the Louboutin for Rodarte Spring 2008 collection (seen on Victoria Beckham). Quite obviously, Rihanna will wear any elaborate gladiator boot from a high fashion house. Observe:
Here's Rihanna on stage wearing a pair of the Givenchy pony-hair gladiator boots that I posted about the other day. Someone made the point that these boots aren't for everyone, and can look quite good if worn by the right person. Is Rihanna that person?I can see these boots being a good choice in this case, as Rihanna's onstage, probably performing for thousands of people, and her outfit should be attention grabbing, like Madonna wearing Gaultier's cone-bra, or Elton John in that that duck suit. And if the goal of this ensemble was bondage-meets-cabana-girl, then Riri and her people succeeded, and I imagine this outfit kept the audience's attention while they had to sit through Rihanna whining out "Umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh!"
Do you think Rihanna could pull these off if her and Chris Brown were walking down the street shopping for grills and neon coloured nail polish? Or are these best left to the likes of Agyness Deyn and Gemma Ward?

I'm not a huge fan of this gladiator trend. This is why:
I'm fairly confident that Caligula never wore boots like these.
Rihanna is wearing a pair of elaborate gladiator boots by Balenciaga. These puppies cost upwards of $12,000. I'm hoping these are loaners from Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquière, otherwise, that's $12,000 Rihanna dropped on a pair of boots that will cause onlookers to spontaneously break out into siezures. I imagine Rihanna will just assume they're dancing, sing "Pon de Replay" and walk on in her boots, that look shockingly like what I would imagine a prostitute on Star Trek might wear. That's right, you heard it here first - Rihanna does it at warp speed.
Although I admire the unique design that went into these, I'm figuring that if Rihanna can't make these work, then there's little luck for the rest of us. What do you think of the Balenciaga gladiator boots?

Listen for Rihanna's cover of "Macho Man"

I spent twenty minutes trying to determine if Rihanna got on the leather leggings train, or if she's just really good with a can of spray paint. I then proceeded to spent another fifteen minutes trying to determine whether or not Rihanna's stylist is the biker from the Village People.

Rihanna attended the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto the other night, where I'm guessing she won some awards for being a favourite of fourteen year olds everywhere. Go RiRi!

Rihanna topped off her biker slut look with a pair of knee high patent leather boots that would make hookers everywhere jealous. Her boots are very similar to the boots worn by Madonna while promoting Hard Candy. (I know these things; I have the Hard Candy poster on my fridge. DON'T MOCK ME.)

Is neon in again? If so, why? Do people not remember 1991? Do we not remember individuals walking around looking like bicycle reflectors? Here's Rihanna in Paris. She sported some powerfully neon platforms that are currently burning my retinas. At least she knows that she will not be hit by any cars, seeing as the driver could see her shoes from about three miles away.
If this shoe looks familiar to you, it's because it is another version of the Giambattista Valli "Victoria" shoe. I much prefer MK Olsen's black suede version. I know neon is kind of Rihanna's thing, but it's seriously unflattering. One of the things I liked about MK's shoes was that they didn't look clunky, despite the size of the shoe. Rihanna's neon accented shoes look clunky, loud and possibly contaminated by radioactive waste.
It's possible to use neon in tasteful ways. Vans has a shoe called "No Skool" that comes in a variety of neon colours:

The Vans running shoe is very simple and reserved, so adding the bright neon is actually a nice touch. Heels are a bit too classy for neon, I think. You run the risk of looking like a late eighties hooker. What do you think of this neon trend? Does anyone think it can work on heels?

Here's the lovely Rihanna at Macy's in New York promoting her new umbrella collection. Yes, that's right, I said umbrella collection.
Get it? Because she sings the song "Umbrella".
Sometimes it shocks me how far celebrities will go to promote themselves. Although Rihanna is looking quite hot in this photo, and I love her new hair, I'm disapointed that she would shamelessly take part in such a cash grab. Yeah, because I'm sure she didn't make enough money working with Jay-Z, who can be quoted as saying "A dynasty like my money lasts three lifetimes". Part of me is hoping that Beyonce will turn up and beat her up with Rihanna's stupid umbrella-ella-ella.
However, the girl does look good. I love how she pairs her black ensemble with a pair of saucy orange pumps. The colour beautifully compliments her skin tone and the colours of her umbrella. If you want to try Rihanna's bold look, try these from Nine West:

This is the Nine West "Elexis". This shoe features a 4" stacked stiletto heel and a trendy reptile stamping. I find the burnt orange colour of this shoe to be reminiscent of autumn, but the bright colour translates well for spring, also. And will I be using my Rihanna brand umbrella on those rainy spring days ahead? Not likely.
