I was shopping on a pretty tight budget - it was my first job after grad school - and against my better judgment decided I could skimp on some basic items. I purchased a pair of black patent (read "plastic") ballet flats at a discount store. They were fairly comfortable, got the job done, and would last me until I could afford something of higher quality - or so I thought. During my first week at work I wore them three times. On the third day, I was sitting in a meeting when I noticed a terrible smell coming up from under the table. My feet had been sweating in those plastic shoes and they were *stinky*! Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one who noticed. A coworker commented on it, in the middle of the meeting, and soon everyone was talking about it. I tried to joke along with the others, playing like it wasn't me, but I wanted to melt into the floor! Needless to say, I threw out the flats that night. Except they didn't have my size! But they had the next size down, so I bought them anyway, hoping, oh I don't know - that they'd stretch or something. Well, the first time I wore them, I went out on a date and we went dancing. It was awful. The straps cut into my feet, and by the end of the night, my feet were so swollen and painful I could barely walk. Even worse, with my swollen feet, it was painfully obvious that the shoes were too small.
